Eligibility criteria 

To be eligible for this program, you must submit your application with evidence of the following: 

  • Be an Australian citizen 
  • Be of First Nations heritage and provide evidence of such (confirmation by a registered Indigenous community organisation) 
  • Be at least 18 years old by December 2024 
  • Hold or be able to obtain a Negative Vetting 1 level security clearance 

Skills you need

To be suitable for a AFP Directions Program, you should have most or all of the following skills:

  • Be an effective communicator 
  • Be a creative thinker with problem-solving abilities 
  • Have strong teamwork skills 
  • Be eager to learn new skills 
  • Be competent in basic IT skills, including Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

Locations

The AFP Directions Program is primarily based at the AFP Headquarters in Canberra. 

What to expect in this program 

Participants gain valuable skills and experience throughout the program, working alongside dedicated people and teams. This program consists of:

  • Complete rotations across various areas, such as investigations, cybersecurity, health and wellbeing, and corporate support 
  • Study for a Certificate IV in Indigenous Leadership while working full-time 
  • Gain professional skills in a range of areas, supported by a dedicated network of mentors and Indigenous Liaison Officers

Initial application

Submit your application online, including your resume and confirmation of First Nations heritage.

Assessment and interview

Shortlisted candidates will participate in competency assessments, personality assessments, and a panel interview.

Matching and Offer

Candidates will be matched with suitable roles and placements, followed by an offer of employment.

Security Clearance

Begin the process of obtaining a Negative Vetting 1 level security clearance.
