Eligibility criteria 

To be eligible for the Australian Science Policy Fellowship Program, you must submit your application with evidence of the following. 

  • Hold a PhD in a STEM field
  • Be no more than 15 years post-PhD completion (adjusted for career interruptions, e.g., family responsibilities). 
  • Obtain a minimum baseline security clearance (this will be facilitated as part of the application process). 
  • APS employees working in a research role are eligible to apply. However, those already in policy or program roles are not eligible.

Skills do you need

To be suitable in the Australian Science Policy Fellowship Program, you should have: 

  • Scientific Expertise: A strong background in a STEM field, with skills in data analysis and scientific evaluation. 
  • Communication Skills: The ability to communicate complex scientific information clearly and effectively. 
  • Adaptability: A willingness to learn new skills and transition from research to policy work. 
  • Collaboration: The ability to work well with colleagues and contribute to a supportive team environment.

Locations

Positions are available in various locations. As part of your application, you'll have the opportunity to nominate whether or not you would be willing to relocate to Canberra for your placement.

What to expect in this program

Fellows work with Commonwealth Government agencies for 12 months, gaining experience in policy development and contributing to the work of the Australian Public Service (APS). This is an excellent chance to develop new skills while applying your scientific background to important policy discussions. 

As a Science Policy Fellow, you will: 

  • Work on Policy Projects: Help shape policy decisions by using your scientific expertise to evaluate issues and provide evidence-based advice. 
  • Be Embedded in Policy Teams: Gain hands-on experience working in policy areas and develop relationships with stakeholders. 
  • Receive Training and Support: Participate in on-the-job training to learn about government processes, with support from experienced policy officers. 
  • Potential for Ongoing Employment: Fellows may have the opportunity to transition to ongoing roles after completing the program.

Online Application

Submit your application on the Australian Science Policy Fellowship Program website. Applications open annually, and up to 20 Fellowships may be offered each year.

Your application will be reviewed, and if suitable, you will be contacted for further discussions and assessments.

Successful candidates will be matched with participating agencies based on skills, preferences, and the needs of the agencies.
