Eligibility criteria 

To be eligible for this program, you must: 

  • Be an Australian citizen at the time of application.
  • Be willing to undergo any police, character, health or other checks required.
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance when required. For more information, refer to the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA).
  • Be currently studying an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a data or digital field.
  • Have completed at least one year of your degree before you start, with (at least) one year of study remaining.

Skills you need

To be suitable for a data or digital cadet role, you should have most or all of the following skills: 

  • Demonstrate an interest in learning about data and digital technologies
  • The capacity to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Personal drive and initiative
  • Work well in a team by collaborating with others in a helpful and professional way
  • Have a positive attitude, be eager to learn and a desire to contribute to the APS and wider community. 

Benefits 

Working with the Australian Government offers excellent benefits, including: 

  • Competitive salary between $59,000 and $70,000 pro rata while you study.
  • A subsidy of up to $800 per successfully completed subject.
  • Generous super contributions of 15.4%
  • A permanent part-time role while studying, transitioning to full-time employment once you graduate.
  • Flexible study and work schedule to balance your studies and work responsibilities. You will have support to succeed in both areas.  

Locations

We recruit data and digital cadets across all Australian states and territories, with the majority of positions located in Canberra. Applications are also accepted for special placements available at APS Academy Campuses located at the University of Newcastle and James Cook University in Townsville. 

What to expect in this program

Participants gain valuable skills and experience throughout the program. You will work alongside dedicated people in the data and digital profession. In this role, you will:

  • Work part-time while finishing your studies, then move to full-time once you graduate.
  • Gain experience in a wide range of government agencies.
  • Receive career coaching and professional guidance to help you succeed in your career.
  • Apply your university studies to real government projects and challenges.

Research

Learn about the Australian Public Service to see if it’s the right fit for you.

Online Application

Submit your application, including a written pitch, personal details, academic information, and a resume. Your resume must be no longer than two pages.

Assessment

Shortlisted candidates will complete aptitude testing and an online one-way video interview. If successful you will be placed in a merit pool. This merit pool will be used to match candidates with participating government agencies.

Matching

We match candidates with agencies based on their skills, experience, and career interests and the business requirements of participating agencies.

Employment Offer

If you are selected, you will receive an offer and complete additional checks. This can include a police check and security clearance.
