Eligibility criteria 

To be eligible for this program, you must submit your application with evidence of the following: 

  • Be an Australian citizen at the time of application. 
  • Be willing to undergo any police, character, health or other checks required.
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance when required. For more information, refer to the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA).
  • Be currently studying an undergraduate or postgraduate degree in a data or digital field. 
  • Have completed at least one year of your degree by January 2025, with (at least) one year remaining.

Skills you need

To be suitable for a data or digital cadet role, you should have most or all of the following skills: 

  • Demonstrate curiosity in learning about data and digital technologies
  • The capacity to build and maintain positive working relationships with colleagues and stakeholders
  • Personal drive and initiative
  • Work well in a team by collaborating with others in a helpful and professional way
  • Maintain a positive attitude by being eager to learn new things and contribute to the community.

Benefits 

Working with the Australian Government offers excellent benefits, including: 

  • Competitive salary between $55,000 and $65,000 pro rata while you study, with up to $800 per successfully completed subject.
  • Generous super contributions of 15.4%
  • A permanent part-time role while studying, transitioning to full-time employment once you graduate. 
  • Flexible study and work schedule to balance your studies and work responsibilities, with support to succeed in both areas. 

Locations

We are recruiting Data and Digital Cadets across all Australian states and territories, with most roles based in Canberra. There are also special placements available at APS Academy Campuses located at the University of Newcastle and James Cook University in Townsville. 

What to expect in this program

Participants gain valuable skills and experience throughout the program, working alongside dedicated people in the data and digital profession, The program consists of: 

  • Part-Time Work and Study: Work part-time while finishing your studies, then move to full-time once you graduate. 
  • Variety of Roles: Gain experience in a wide range of government agencies working on different data and digital projects. 
  • Support and Development: Receive career coaching and professional guidance to help you succeed in your career. 
  • Hands-On Learning: Apply your university studies to real government projects and challenges.

Submit your application, including personal details, academic information, and a resume (no longer than two pages).

Assessment

Shortlisted candidates will complete an aptitude test and interview. Successful candidates will be placed in a merit pool for consideration by participating government agencies.

Matching

We match candidates with agencies based on their skills, experience, and career interests.

Employment Offer

Selected candidates will receive an employment offer and must complete pre-employment checks such as police checks and security clearances.
