Eligibility criteria 

To be eligible for the Economist Stream in the Australian Government Graduate Program (AGGP), you must: 

  • Be an Australian citizen at the time of application. 
  • Hold or be completing a bachelor’s degree in Economics or Econometrics, or any bachelor’s degree with a major or minor in Economics, by December 31, 2024. 
  • Have completed your most recent degree between January 1, 2020, and December 31, 2024. 
  • Be willing to undergo police, character, health, or other checks as needed. 
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance.

To be successful in the Economist Stream, you should: 

  • Have a strong interest in economic research and policy analysis. 
  • Be ready to work on policy issues that impact the community. 
  • Be eager to contribute to the development and analysis of policies.

Locations

Most Economist graduate positions are in Canberra, with some roles available in Sydney and Melbourne. Relocation assistance may be provided by some agencies based on their policies.

Candidates found suitable will be placed in a merit pool and matched with an agency based on experience, preferences, and location.

If successful, your matched agency will contact you with an offer of employment.
