Eligibility criteria 

To be eligible for the Indigenous Apprenticeships Program, you must meet the following criteria: 

  • Identify as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. 
  • Be able to provide proof of your Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander heritage. 
  • Be able to provide evidence of Australian citizenship. 

There are no specific education requirements for applying. The program is open to everyone, from recent school leavers to those looking for a career change. This program is designed for new APS employees, so it’s not ordinarily suit people already working in the APS or those who have completed similar programs. 

Skills you need? 

To be suitable for the Indigenous Apprenticeships Program, you should have most or all of the following skills:

  • Willingness to Learn: Eager to pick up new skills and knowledge. 
  • Communication Skills: Strong written and verbal communication. 
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to find solutions to challenges in your work. 
  • Teamwork: Enjoy working with others and being part of a supportive team.

The Indigenous Apprenticeships Program offers opportunities across Australia. Roles are available in various agencies, including but not limited to: 

  • Adelaide 
  • Brisbane 
  • Canberra 
  • Melbourne 
  • Sydney 
  • Perth 
  • Darwin 
  • Townsville

What to expect in this program

Participants gain valuable skills and experience throughout the program, working alongside dedicated people and teams. This program consists of:

  • Full-time work and study: Gain valuable experience while working and studying towards a formal qualification. 
  • Variety of roles: Work in different positions depending on your placement agency. 
  • Training and development: Access structured training to help you build your skills. 
  • Support throughout: Benefit from support provided by your Indigenous mentor, buddy, and study resources to ensure your success. 

Application Process

Initial Application

Submit your application, and we’ll assess your eligibility, resume, and written communication skills.

Assessment and Interview

Complete an online skills assessment, followed by an interview with a panel.

Reference Checks

We’ll contact your referees as part of the selection process.

Preferences and Matching

You’ll have a chance to list your preferred agencies and locations, and we’ll try to match you with them.

Receive Offer

If selected, you’ll receive an offer to join the APS. Once accepted, your placement agency will guide you through onboarding.
