Eligibility criteria 

To be eligible for the Accounting and Financial Management (AFM) Stream in the Australian Government Graduate Program (AGGP), you must submit your application with evidence of the following: 

  • Be an Australian citizen at the time of application.
  • Have completed an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 qualification (bachelor degree), or higher, between 1 January and 31 December 2026.
  • Have completed an eligible qualification as listed on the Department of Finance website.
  • Meet the minimum accredited educational requirements for further qualifications such as CPA Australia or CA ANZ.
  • Be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance if required. For more information, refer to the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA).
  • Be willing to undergo any police, character, health, or other checks required.

Skills you need 

To be suitable for an Accounting and Financial Management graduate role, you should have most or all of the following skills:

  • Strong numeracy and attention to detail.
  • Ability to analyse financial information and data.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • A keen eye for accuracy and strong numeracy skills.
  • Problem solving skills and sound judgement.

Locations

Positions are located in Canberra. A limited number of positions may be available nationwide in major cities. Relocation assistance may be available for successful candidates.

Managed by the Department of Finance, the Accounting and Financial Management Stream recruits graduates across a range of Australian Government and Commonwealth agencies.

Initial Application

Submit your application. This includes 500-word pitch, resume, academic transcripts, and proof of citizenship. Applications close 13 April 2026

Online testing or video Interview

Shortlisted candidates will progress to the online testing stage and/or participate in a video interview. This assessment stage may involve problem solving, numerical reasoning and/or behavioural and emotional testing. The video interview is a behavioural interview. This may occur over the course of 1-2 months.

Assessment centre

Selected candidates will participate in virtual activities such as panel interviews, individual presentations, group activity and/or written task.

Reference checks

Candidate reference will be contacted.

Matching and offers

If found suitable, you’ll be placed in a merit pool. Agencies will then conduct a matching process and may contact you to discuss your interest, followed by an employment offer.
