Eligibility criteria
To be eligible for the Data Stream in the Australian Government Graduate Program (AGGP), you must submit your application with evidence of the following:
- Have completed at least an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 qualification (a Bachelor degree), or higher equivalent by 31 December 2026.
- Have completed your most recent eligible qualification between 1 January 2022 to 31 December 2026
- Be an Australian citizen at the time of application.
- Be able to obtain and maintain a valid Australian Government security clearance if required. For more information, refer to the Australian Government Security Vetting Agency (AGSVA).
- Be willing to undergo any police, character, health, or other checks required.
Skills you need
To be suitable for a Data Graduate role, you should have most or all of the following skills:
- Strong data technical skills.
- Strong communication skills and collaboration skills.
- Critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Locations
Most positions are available in Canberra, Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney. A limited number of positions may be available in Albury, Alice Springs, Darwin, Geelong, Hobart, Newcastle, Richmond, Robina and Townsville.
Roles are full-time, with potential for flexible work arrangements depending on your placement agency.

Application Process
Initial application
Applications are managed through the ABS’s eRecruitment system. In your application, you must confirm your eligibility, upload your latest academic transcript/s and resume, provide a written pitch, and complete a Data Skills Assessment.
Online assessment
If shortlisted, you will be invited to complete an online assessment consisting of a Data Fundamentals Task (technical assessment) and Situational Judgement Task (behavioural assessment).
Interview
Selected candidates will be invited to an online interview with two or three panel members, lasting about 45 minutes.
Reference checks
We will conduct reference checks with your nominated referee. Please note that contacting referees does not guarantee you will be offered a role.
Preferences and matching
If you are found suitable, you will be placed in a merit pool. You will be invited to provide your preferences for agencies and locations. There is no guarantee of placement with a specific agency. However, your preferences will be taken into consideration wherever possible.
Receive offer
If successful, the Data Stream will present you with an offer on behalf of the participating agency. If you accept your offer, your placement agency will then contact you to begin the onboarding process.
